The Peony and Arabesque is happiness pattern that means rich and prosperous. A similar pattern is found on old Chinese rugs. Overlapping petals and graceful arabesques are expressed only in shades of indigo and brown.
I think the ground color was originally a dark, almost black indigo dye, but now, the overall texture is soft and faded. This indigo is a good dyeing color that has faded over time and still has a dignity.
